Nature’s Palette: Unveiling the ‘Living Curiosities’ Series
Within the canvas of nature, Crested Butte emerges as a gallery of living curiosities, each wildflower and landscape a masterpiece of resilience and mystery. My latest series, 'Living Curiosities’, is born from this mesmerizing intersection of the natural world's allure and its inherent dangers. It’s an exploration that goes beyond the visual, delving into the spirit of nature’s resilience and the curious adaptations that life exhibits in the face of adversity.
Guided by the insights and inspiration from 'Your Creative Gold,' a class led by Jehane, the lovely and very talented art agent whose influence has reshaped my creative journey, I've ventured deeper into the natural world's mysteries. Jehane's mentorship has nurtured my artist exploration, encouraging me to pursue my own artistic passions, which I’ve found within the vast landscape of Crested Butte’s curious wildflowers.
This series is not just an artistic endeavor; it's a personal odyssey that intertwines my journey with the resilience, dangers, and mysteries of the natural world. 'Living Curiosities' reflects my fascination with the delicate balance of life, where beauty coexists with peril, and curiosity leads to discovery. Join me as we uncover the stories of survival, adaptation, and the profound curiosities that thrive in the heart of nature.
As we peel back the layers of 'Living Curiosities,' the mood board stands as a testament to the series' foundation. It’s a visual symphony that resonates with the essence of Earth’s paradise, a curated echo of Crested Butte’s enchanting wildflowers and landscapes. It was significantly shaped by Jehane’s original mood board, which I’ve incorporated into my own. This blend not only influenced my color choices but also the thematic essence of my series. With Jehane’s palette as a starting point, I infused my personal twist, reflecting my unique interpretation while maintaining a visual dialogue with her concepts.
Choosing to adhere to Jehane’s color way was a leap towards discipline in my creative process. My natural inclination towards a kaleidoscope of colors often led me down paths of vibrant chaos. Perhaps one day I’ll share these mishaps. However, this series called for something different - a harmony of hues that could convey the depth, flow, and mysterious allure of nature’s wonders. Though I found myself wandering slightly from the prescribed path, the palette I chose was instrumental in weaving a thread of cohesion through my four illustrations.
As we transition from the broader strokes of inspiration to the intricate details of creation, each piece in ‘Living Curiosities’ emerges from a deep-rooted connection to the natural world and its manifold mysteries. This journey from concept to canvas, guided by the subtle guidance of Jehane’s mood board, process, and my own personal experiences within Crested Butte’s vibrant landscape, has been one of exploration and discovery. The following artworks, each with its own story and significance, collectively embody the essence of curiosity that drives this series. They are not just visual representations but invitations to ponder the complexities of life and the beauty that lies in the unexpected. As we delve into the specifics of each piece, I invite you to embrace the spirit of exploration and consider the myriad ways in which life’s curiosities unfold around us.
While waiting for my traditional watercolors to dry, I took a spontaneous dive into Procreate, experimenting with one of Lisa Glantz’s Procreate watercolor brushes. The transition was surprisingly seamless, mimicking the analog experience closely, yet streamlining my biggest challenge: translating the vibrancy of real-life colors into the digital sphere. Although digital watercolors slightly differ in contrast from their physical counterparts, Procreate’s stamps and clipping masks offer a creative solution, allowing me to reintroduce that authentic watercolor texture. This exploration, a new frontier in my artistic journey within this collection, has been both exhilarating and enlightening, proving that digital artistry can complement and extend the traditional techniques I hold dear.
In weaving together the threads of ‘Living Curiosities,’ we’ve journeyed through a tapestry of nature’s paradoxes—its beauty and danger, resilience and vulnerability, all encapsulated within the canvas of Crested Butte’s wildflowers and landscapes. This series has been more than an artistic exploration; it’s been a deep, reflective process that has taught me invaluable lessons about the intricate balance of life on Earth. Through each brushstroke, whether digital or analog, I’ve delved deeper into the mysteries that fuel my creativity and my profound appreciation for the natural world.
‘Living Curiosities’ has revealed the endless inspirations that lie in nature’s smallest details and the vastness of its landscapes. It has reminded me that art and nature are both bound by cycles of growth, decay, and rebirth, constantly evolving and inspiring in their own unique ways. This journey has not only shaped my artistic practice but has also deepened my connection with the world around me, igniting a curiosity that drives me to keep exploring, learning, and creating.
